125th Birth Anniversary of SSR: Celebrating a visionary leader’s legacy

“As we commemorate the 125th Birth Anniversary of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR), we remember not only the political leader but also the humanist, the reformer, the person who inspired the Nation to believe in itself.”

The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, made this statement, this afternoon, as he launched a First Day Cover on SSR and an exhibition on ‘The Life and Legacy of SSR’ at the City Council of Port Louis in the margins of the commemoration of the 125th Birth Anniversary of SSR. The exhibition retraces the life, vision and achievements of SSR as Mayor of Port Louis, Prime Minister of Mauritius, and Governor-General.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Paul Raymond Bérenger; Ministers, Junior Ministers; Members of the National Assembly; Members of the Diplomatic Corps; as well as other eminent personalities were also present at the ceremony organised by the Ministry of Arts and Culture in collaboration with the City Council of Port Louis and Mauritius Post Ltd.

In his address, Prime Minister Ramgoolam underlined that the event aims at remembering and celebrating the life and legacy of SSR, the Father of the Nation and the Architect of the Independence of Mauritius, whose leadership and relentless dedication to the country’s advancement were instrumental in shaping the history of our Nation. He recalled SSR’s resolute commitment to education for all, which opened new horizons for countless Mauritians and laid the foundation for social advancement and national development.

Dr Ramgoolam recalled that SSR, guided by values such as patriotism, humility, service and the belief in the potential of every Mauritian, spearheaded major reforms including the setting up the University of Mauritius in 1965. The emphasis SSR laid on accessible healthcare, social justice and equal opportunity ensured that every Mauritian, regardless of background, could aspire to a better future, he added.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister reminded that, on the international front, the Father of the Nation left no stone unturned to strengthen cooperation with other countries, especially those with which Mauritius has historic ties.

He reiterated Government’s commitment to pursue SSR’s vision of a just and inclusive society, where every child can fulfil his or her potential.

Following the event, Prime Minister Ramgoolam attended a wreath laying ceremony at the statue of SSR at the Port Louis Waterfront.
