The Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary of the State of Israel to the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Eliav Belotserkovsky, met the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, this morning, at the State House, in Réduit.
Following their meeting, a delegation of the Island Hebrew Congregation, all members of the Jewish community of Mauritius, met both President Prithvirajsing Roopun and Ambassador Eliav Belotserkovsky.
During the meeting, President Roopun underpinned the importance of remembering and reconnecting to history. He emphasised on the need to draw and learn from lessons of our past as we build our future.
Besides, the President expressed admiration for the resilience, solidarity and mutual support that prevailed among the Jewish Community as they set foot in the country, whilst lauding their capacity to adapt and integrate the Mauritian society.
As for Ambassador Eliav Belotserkovsky, he pointed out that his delegation is currently in Mauritius to mark the 83rd anniversary of the arrival of the Jewish detainees during colonial times. He underlined that the warmth displayed by the Mauritian community to the Jewish detainees contributed to their survival in the harsh conditions prevailing in these days.
Furthermore, the Ambassador recalled that the long existing ties shared between Israel and Mauritius go back before Mauritius acceded to its independence, and highlighted that both countries are now working together in various spheres to reach significant development. These include: water management, agricultural development, healthcare, tourism and education.
