The Chief Justice of India, Shri Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, paid a courtesy call, today, on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis. The Attorney General, Mr Gavin Glover, and the High Commissioner of India, Shri Anurag Srivastava, were also present.
Shri Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is on an official visit in Mauritius at the invitation of the Chief Justice of Mauritius, Mrs Rehana Bibi Mungly-Gulbul.
This visit forms part of ongoing efforts to further strengthen historical and institutional ties between India and Mauritius. Discussions focused on judicial cooperation and the sharing of experiences in the fields of law and justice administration.
Shri Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was appointed Judge of the High Court of Bombay in 2005 where he served for 14 years. In 2019 he was promoted judge of the Supreme Court of India and in May this year he was appointed the 52nd Chief Justice of India.
He is currently the Chancellor of several National Law Universities in India and the ex officio patron-in-chief of the National Legal Services Authority which provides free legal services to those who cannot afford to retain services of an advocate.
He has delivered landmark judgments in different areas of the law, including constitutional law, criminal law, and administrative law.
During his visit to Mauritius, Shri Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai will call on dignitaries and will meet judges at the Supreme Court. He will also deliver a lecture to legal practitioners on 03 October 2025 on the theme “The Rule of Law in the biggest democracy”.
