In the context of the resumption of studies for academic year 2025, the Minister of Education and Human Resources, Dr Mahend Gungapersad, was present this morning at the Lady Sushil Ramgoolam State Secondary School in Triolet. He was accompanied by Member of Parliament, Mr Kaviraj Rookny, and the Director of Zone One, Mr Allybye Aubdoolah.
In his address to students and teachers, Dr Gungapersad highlighted the importance of free education in empowering both girls and students from underprivileged backgrounds. He pointed out that free education allowed girls to attend school without the burden of financial barriers, which previously led many of them to be sacrificed by parents in favour of their sons.
The Minister stated that the school has gained recognition and attracted many students, especially girls, due to its strong
reputation. He urged the students to focus not only on academic success but also on personal development. Dr Gungapersad encouraged them to become models of humility, respect, and discipline, and to participate in extracurricular activities to enhance their skills without neglecting the importance of reading to enrich their minds and soul.
Moreover, Minister Gungapersad also spoke about the importance of maintaining discipline and respect within the school environment while calling students to avoid
bullying, body-shaming, and disrespect. “True education”, he said, “should nurture both the mind and the heart, fostering a holistic approach to learning.”
The resumption of studies was enhanced by a cultural programme organised by the teachers and students featuring an opening dance, a sitar performance and a group song by Grade 8 and 9 students. Following the official ceremony, the Minister participated in a tree planting ceremony. The visit also included a tour of an exhibition featuring works from the Art & Design, Home Economics, Design and Technology, and Hinduism departments.
