A consultative workshop on “Strategic Visioning of the ICT Sector”, an initiative of the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, opened, this morning, at the InterContinental Resort in Balaclava. The objective is to chart the way forward of the ICT and innovation sectors in Mauritius for the next five years.
The Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Dr Avinash
Ramtohul, and other stakeholders of the industry were present at the opening
ceremony. In his address, the ICT Minister stated that the objective of the workshop is to serve as a platform to engage leaders of the ICT industry in meaningful discussions and to
evaluate the evolving needs and demands of the industry to strive and thrive.
Mauritius, he noted, has evolved in the ICT sector over the last four decades and the
sector has largely contributed to the economic development of the country. The collaboration of the private sector has been notable, he said, adding that Government will ensure the provision of the most conducive environment for actors of the industry to evolve and for the sector to further prosper.
Minister Ramtohul also spoke of data protection, and underpinned the pressing need
to ensure that all data are protected and that laws regulating data protection are enhanced. He mentioned Mobile ID and e-health services as prominent initiatives which can further digitalise the country. Such projects, he said, are in line with Government’s vision for more improved and enhanced citizen’s experiences whilst helping the country to attain its objective of transforming Mauritius into an intelligent island.
