Seventh cyclone bulletin for Mauritius issued at 0410 hours on Monday 20 February 2023.

At 0400 hours, very intense tropical cyclone Freddy was centred at about 360 km to the north east of Mauritius, near latitude 18.0 degrees south and longitude 60.8 degrees east. The estimated central pressure of Freddy is around 900 hectopascals and the estimated wind gusts near its centre is about 300 km/h.
It is moving towards the west south west at an accelerated speed of about 28 km/h.

On this trajectory Freddy is dangerously approaching Mauritius and represents a direct threat to the island. A rapid deterioration in the weather and cyclonic conditions are expected in the early afternoon. Freddy may pass at about 120 km at its closest distance to the north north west of the island in the early evening.

The public in Mauritius is advised to complete all precautions and to stay in safe places.

Weather will be cloudy with passing showers, moderate at times. Rainy periods will become more frequent and heavy, with thunderstorms in the early afternoon.

Wind will blow from the south east at a speed of about 40 km/h, strengthening gradually with gusts reaching 120 km/h in the afternoon.

Sea will be high becoming phenomenal with heavy swells. As Freddy approaches Mauritius, storm surge is likely to cause coastal inundation to the north and the east. It is therefore strictly advised not to go at sea.
