The Gold medalists of the Youth and Junior African Weightlifting Championships, namely Sephora Lent and Antonin Brousse de Gersigny, were received yesterday by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Darmarajen Nagalingum, and the Junior Minister of Youth and Sports, Mrs Eileen Karen Lee Chin Foo Kune-Bacha, at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. The Championships took place in Kenya from 18 to 21 November 2024.
Sephora Lent earned the title of African Junior Champion in the category of -64kg with three gold medals. Antonin Brousse de Gersigny bagged two gold medals and one silver medal in the category of 67kg. He also won a bronze medal in the Junior category.
In a statement, Minister Nagalingum expressed his satisfaction with regard to the remarkable performances of the Mauritian athletes at the Youth and Junior African Weightlifting Championships. The athletes have made Mauritius proud by winning five gold medals, he stated, while applauding the coaches and the Federation for their continuous work and dedication.
As for Mrs Kune-Bacha, she indicated that Government recognises the efforts and sacrifices that the athletes have put during their participation at the Championships. The Ministry, she added, will continue to invest and support Mauritian athletes so that they excel in their respective fields.
