Mauritius won second place at the IOIG 2023 with a total of 281 medals

Mauritius finished in second place with a total of 281 medals, including 91 gold, 87 silver and 103 bronze, at the 11th edition of the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) held in Madagascar from 25 August to 03 September 2023.

The winner of the IOIG 2023 was Madagascar with a total of 272 medals including 121 gold, 71 silver and 80 bronze. Reunion came in third place with 244 medals, including 80 gold, 90 silver and 74 bronze.

The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Stephan Toussaint, made this statement, today, during a press conference, in the presence of the President of the Mauritius Olympic Committee, Mr Philippe Hao Thyn Voon, and other personalities at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex.

The Minister applauded the Mauritian athletes for their outstanding performance at the IOIG 2023. He underlined that some athletes established new records in several disciplines during the Games, bringing great pride to the country. They are namely Noa Bibi, Jean Ian Carré, Christopher Sophie, Liliane Potiron, Brandy Perrine, and Tessa Ip Hen Cheung.

He saluted the efforts, courage, solidarity, team spirit and the determination of the Mauritian delegation, in particular the athletes and the trainers, for their dedication and struggle while competing away from home in face of adversities.

He dwelt on the difficulties and discomforts faced by the delegation in Madagascar in terms of transport, food, climatic conditions while highlighting that the officials of the ministry did their best to ensure that the athletes gave their best.

Minister Toussaint also expressed his gratitude to the personnel of the special medical unit who worked relentlessly throughout the Games to attend to the Mauritian athletes.

The Sports Minister further pointed out that the gold, silver and bronze medallists would receive each a sum of Rs 50,000, Rs 40,000 and Rs 20,000, respectively. The technical directors, coaches and trainers will be rewarded with a sum between Rs 8,000 to Rs 20,000.

The 12th edition of the IOIG will take place in the Union of the Comoros in 2027.
